EAST CENTRE
The East Centre site has long played an important role in the life of Prudhoe, serving over the years as a Victorian school, youth centre and home to Open Door adult learning services. Following a significant structural decline the existing facility was deemed unsafe and permanently closed to public access. Mosedale Gillatt Architects were appointed to work closely with Prudhoe Community Partnership to develop a vision for the site's future. Through an extensive programme of consultation and engagement, the practice worked collaboratively with local residents, youth organisations, community groups, stakeholders and project partners to understand local aspirations and identify opportunities for a new build community-focused development.
The resulting proposals deliver an innovative and sustainable scheme centred around a modern youth hub, providing flexible spaces for learning, training and social activities, alongside supported accommodation for young people requiring additional assistance as they transition towards independent living. The development also incorporates landscaped public green space and opportunities for complementary commercial uses, creating an active and welcoming destination that contributes to the vitality of the town centre.
Shaped by community feedback throughout the design process, the scheme responds directly to local needs while creating a distinctive and future-focused facility. Mosedale Gillatt Architects led the design development and created a bold yet sensitive proposal that balances social value, placemaking and long-term sustainability. The scheme has now been submitted for planning approval and represents a significant investment in the future of Prudhoe and its young people.
