Mosedale Gillatt Architects was first appointed in 2019 to work with Leeds city Council, drafting a gazeteer, condition report and masterplan for the nationally important Registered Park at Temple Newsam, Leeds. As part of the masterplan development, opportunities for change across the park were identified, with the former horticultural yards to the north of the G2 listed Walled Garden identified as an area where new work could be accommodated.
In 2021, we were approach by Luminate Education Group to pursue an element of our original sketch proposals – a linear footprint building which recalls the former Potting Sheds and work areas originally sited adjacent to the heated wall. The client was keen to pursue Passive House design and offsite construction, which would enable construction to be streamlined and costs managed.
A complex site, within a conservation area, bounded by mature trees and with below ground vent tunnels for the heated walls and adjacent to a Scheduled Monument, the scheme presented a unique design challenge.
The team developed a modular linear building, which could be fabricated off site and assembled within the narrow strip of land bounded by the walled garden and mature woodland. Working with the heritage constraints of this highly complex site and requirements of the DfE, the team have delivered a £5m Passivhaus certified classroom block for the School of Land and Animal Science at Leeds City College. The project was developed in a BIM environment with MGA taking the lead not only on the heritage aspects but also on process design. The Larsen Panel SIPs system was fabricated off site and the ‘horticultural’ zinc clad form was negotiated with statutory consultees to meet the high quality design standards required within this highly sensitive setting.
