NORTHUMBERLAND HALL

The Northumberland Hall Project will restore and revitalise one of Alnwick’s most important historic buildings, securing the future of a Grade I listed landmark currently identified as a Heritage at Risk. Located in the heart of the town, the project will transform the building into a vibrant cultural destination that celebrates the history, heritage and identity of North Northumberland.

The design combines sensitive conservation with carefully considered contemporary interventions, including a carefully integrated new mezzanine gallery that introduces additional exhibition space while enhancing visitors’ experience and appreciation of the building’s historic fabric. The restored hall will provide a fully accessible museum and gallery, creating new opportunities for learning, engagement and participation.

Flexible exhibition and event spaces, alongside immersive interpretation, will support a dynamic programme of displays, activities and community events while ensuring the building can adapt to future needs. New facilities will include a retail space featuring locally sourced products, a community meeting room and dedicated office accommodation for the museum’s expanding volunteer team.

Designed to support the wider regeneration of Alnwick town centre, the development will increase visitor numbers, strengthen connections with local schools, businesses and creative practitioners, and create opportunities for volunteering, training and employment. By balancing heritage conservation with contemporary design and community investment, Northumberland Hall will become an inclusive, sustainable and inspiring cultural destination that honours its past while creating a vibrant future for residents and visitors alike.
