WOODS POTTERY

'Head up Stepney Bank to see the mix of old and new buildings, with skillful conversions such as that of Woods Pottery by Mosedale Gillatt Architects'

- Pevsner's Newcastle Gateshead edition

Mosedale Gillatt Architects successfully integrated historic buildings with contemporary infill to create a courtyard of managed workspace, studios and an art gallery to reinforce the cultural quarter of Ouseburn Valley, Newcastle.

Built on the site of a former Pottery works in the late 1800's, the Woods Pottery buildings had long ago fallen into disrepair and were being used as a vehicle dismantling shop. When the last owner moved out, a site contaminated with heavy oil and a range of derelict buildings were left behind. A scheme was agreed with English Heritage which would create workspace accommodation for small businesses - and become a catalyst for future development within the acclaimed regeneration of the Ouseburn Valley.
